Meet Matt & Jennifer Wier!

Matt and Jennifer will be joining Six Rivers Market starting June 15th as our new Market Managers. Matt will be the main contact with Jennifer filling in as needed. You can best reach them via email at: info@sixriversmarket.org

Matt and Jen Wier moved to Sandpoint in December 2009 from the Seattle area. They were interested in living in a small town with a great community spirit.

Jen has previously been an administrative assistant, worked in the hospitality industry, and has also studied culinary arts in school. The last of which introduced her into a world of local food and sustainability.

Matt has a Bachelor’s degree in Business, experience as a project manager, and spent time as a market manager and farmhand for one of Growing Washington’s organic vegetable farms. The time on the farm helped solidify his love of growing good food and the satisfaction of seeing others enjoy it.

Together, they hope to bring their passion and excitement to Six Rivers Market and are looking forward to being a part of the local food movement in Sandpoint.

The new Local Food Software should be live within the next few weeks. We'll all be able to enjoy a number of new features, including easy check-out and online payment, emails sent only to those who have ordered (or Producers who have orders), simple navigation and ease of use. This software will be a tremendous asset to Six Rivers Market and should help the cooperative grow and expand. We will send additional information before the new system goes live.

If you order regularly you know what an amazing asset Kendra Gray is to Six Rivers Market, volunteering her afternoon just about every Wednesday to help fill your bags with delicious food. Kendra will have less time for volunteering so we're looking for additional volunteers through the next few months. If you have an hour or two on Wednesday afternoon, between 1:00 and 6:00 PM, please email us with times and dates you might be available.

Eat Local Day

The next Eat Local Day is set for Sunday, July 3 (or a day close to it). Join other Six Rivers Market members by committing to eat an all-local meal at least once a month. Spend just $10 on local food, this one day a month, and collectively we can make a BIG difference! This month's recipe is for a Berry Pancake Puff.

Berry Pancake PuffA

Ingredients

3 Tbs. butter, melted and divided
1 cup Springs of Hope Milk
6 fresh eggs
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp. salt
2 Tbs. powdered sugar

Berry Topping

3 cups fresh berries (coming soon!)
1/3 cup fruit preserves
Lemon juice and sugar to taste

Directions

Preheat oven to 450 degrees. For berry topping, gently stir together berries and preserves. Set aside. For pancake, brush a deep baking dish with 1 tablespoon of butter. In mixing bowl, combine milk, eggs, and remaining butter. Whisk. Continue whisking and slowly add combined flour and salt until egg mixture is smooth. Pour batter into baking dish. Bake 13 minutes. Reduce oven temperature to 350 degrees and continue baking 15-17 minutes or until sides are crisp and golden brown. Remove pancake from oven; immediately sprinkle with powdered sugar. Fill center with berry topping. Cut into wedges and serve. 4 servings

New Software in the Works

The Board is pleased to announce that Six Rivers Market will soon be converting to a new software! If you are familiar with the current system, you know it works, but it's definitely quirky! The new system will be much more fluid, intuitive, and all-around just easier to use. It should be a clean transition, with all data converted to the new system before we make the new system live. We'll keep you posted on any changes that will affect customers and/or producers directly. In the meantime, here are the highlights of the Local Food Marketplace software which we'll be converting to:

Easy to navigate with product menu available throughout the system
Traditional shopping cart system, with ability to add multiple quantities when adding items to cart.
Product reviews can be made by each product.
No log in required until checking out!
Suggested items shown according to what's in the shopping cart.
Easy checkout with credit card (or still pay via check or cash upon delivery).

Six Rivers Market has a few more changes on the horizon, most noticably is our change in management. Harmony Libby did an amazing job as Market Manager this past year, going above and beyond to keep Six Rivers Market rolling each week, always with her big, memorable smile. Thank you, Harmony, we appreciate all your work!

Meadow Summers, founder of Six Rivers Market, will be filling in for Harmony over the next few months as the new Board begins the hiring process for a new manager. To better focus on the management transition, Meadow will be easing out of her work with the board.

The Six Rivers Market board welcomes two new fantastic members, Ron Kilgore of Muskrat Farm and Cindy Peer, already proving to be a fantastic volunteer. Ron and Cindy will be filling in board positions held by Mya Sanger and Doug Schabell, of Windrush Farm. Doug recently sold his farm and moved from North Idaho. Both were incredible assets to the board. Thank you so much, Mya and Doug!

Event Recap and Changes on the Horizon!

Thank you for taking some time out of your simply gorgeous Saturday afternoon to check out what was going on at 524 Church Street! Guests enjoyed tasty treats, exceptional coffee-- straight from the roaster, the acoustic sounds of local artists Marty Perron and Karen Pogorzelski, and wonderful conversation. Meanwhile, the kid's kept busy with Sherry (from Creations at Cedar Street Bridge) at the craft table-- creating tissue paper flowers, solar systems, and glitter projects galore! A BIG thank you to all who attended and contributed!

As part of the event, the Six Rivers Board members conducted a brief overview of how the market is doing and discussed a few changes on the horizon! A financial report was available for interested guests, if you would like a copy of this report please send us an email request. Simply put, the initial funding (that has served as a bit of a cushion to the market) raised during the beginning stages of our community cooperative, has about run dry. All this means is that we must now operate solely based on sales-- which has always been the ultimate goal of the market. Our members have really made such a valiant effort since the move-- proving that the market truly is of value to them, and the community as a whole. So, THANK YOU! Let's keep that momentum rolling...

As for the changes... I have decided to redirect my role within the market and will be stepping down as Market Manager. My hope is to stay involved with Six Rivers as a volunteer and member of the board.

I am leaving my current position in great hands! Thank you, Meadow, for stepping in to fill this role once again. Meadow Summers will be taking over the management responsibilities beginning in April and until we find that perfect candidate to permanently fill the role-- someone with a deep passion for local food and the drive and dedication to keep the momentum moving forward.

I have thoroughly enjoyed running the market this past year, and really appreciate the amazing opportunity! What a wonderful group of individuals— from the tireless work of the producers to the incredible support of our members— you are what Six Rivers is all about! I also want to thank the Board, for all their hard work behind the scenes, and Kendra for being such a volunteer ALL STAR-- I appreciate it!!!

It’s Winter – Get Growing Anyway

This year’s pendulum swing from blizzard to Pineapple express and back again has been a typical North Idaho pattern. We have endured it first with shovels and then with knee-high rubber boots. The good news is, the end of winter is near and the seed starting, gardening season is coming.

Even if you had to dig them out of the mailbox under a three-foot berm of snow, you were probably glad to see the 2011 seed catalogs in your mailbox. With verdant photos of landscapes bathed in light and flowers, they’re a welcome break and even a ray of hope.

About Us
Just out of college I got an apprenticeship working on an organic farm in Ohio that was owned by the National Audubon Society. Aullwood was a teaching farm that had just about every kind of livestock animal there is. It was there that I met and fell in love with Francis, the milk goat. I also became immediately hooked on farming (to the point where when I wasn’t outside working, I was inside reading about it). When I left Ohio, I moved to Sandpoint to work for Greentree Naturals so that I could begin learning how to grow my own food. The next year, Diane Green set me up with Rick and Lora Lea Misterly of Quillisascut Cheese Co. in Rice, Washington. The Misterly’s were milking 40 goats by hand and making cheese twice a day. I loved everything about them, their farm, and their lifestyle. They continue to be my mentors, and I hope to run a dairy as amazing as theirs one day. I moved from Rice to Bend, OR and worked as the herdswoman for Juniper Grove Farm. After one more farm job in Chelan, WA I felt ready to start my own place. Of all the places I have lived, Sandpoint was always my favorite.

The Wheyward Goat Cheese Company is located at Hoodoo Valley Farm in Vay, ID and sits on 20 acres that backs up to forest service land. It became a certified dairy with the Idaho Department of Agriculture in May of 2009. This year (2010) the herd has 10 does and 2 bucks and 9 doelings, with the hope of slowly growing to a maximum of 40 does. I hope to add 5 more does to the herd this season. All of the goats have names, are milked by hand, and are out on pasture whenever possible. Cheese is made with fresh milk, every other day. When there is not enough grass, they are fed alfalfa and grass hay from local farms. The girls are due to kid the third week of March and fresh cheese should begin appearing the first week of April. This year I will be making chevre and raw milk feta. I hope to one day add hard aged cheeses as well as mild ripened ones.

After many years of planning, in October of 2006 our first nine bison arrived followed by Midnight, our 2,400 lb bull who arrived in December. In May of 2009 with a 100% calf drop our herd increased by seven, with the potential of eight calves in due late spring/early summer of 2010. Our Tamworth pigs are an old heritage breed pasture pig that are rotated onto the paddocks when the bison are moved onto the next. They thrive on the grass and help to rejuvenate the pasture. They are in the pastures all year long, wintering in mobile huts and can spring and summer farrow in the pastures. We are in a growth mode, progressively increasing our acres of pasture with the assistance of the animals.

I have wanted to be a farmer since highschool. But no one from the suburbs of Pittsburgh, Pa goes to college to study farming, so I didn't. I studied English Literature, Philosophy and Biology-get ready world here I come. It wasn't until 2002 when I re-evaluated my life, that I devoted myself to this career. I packed up everything that I could fit into my Subaru and moved from Dillon, Colorado to Sandpoint, Idaho to learn what I could from Diane Green at Greentree Naturals. After spending 3 seasons with her, I realized that I couldn't possibly farm on my own (no husband, no family, no land) and gave up this fantasy. I moved to Bend, Oregon because I mistakenly thought that maybe I was a city girl. I was very wrong. From there though, the universe worked its magic. The next thing I knew, I had moved yet again, this time to Newport, Wa. Here I found a couple looking for someone to farm two acres. Land problem solved. And they ran a therapeutic community for young adults, so if I could make weeding, transplanting, weeding, squishing bugs, and weeding fun, I would have help. Not having a family problem solved. I now have been at Penrith Farms for four seasons. The young adults seem to find working in the gardens with me fun. And we keep on producing fantastic food.

Our cows are machine milked and the milk is pumped directly into our 200 gallon bulk tank for immediate straining, cooling and storage. We, Jonah and Megan Lucht, purchased the Bongo Brew on Kootenai cut off Rd. in May of 2008. With the business came a small Deitrichs Roaster and we jumped right in to a wonderful little coffee shop, selling delicious drinks using beans roasted right on the property. We quickly changed to fair trade, organic green beans and the drinks got even better. To keep up with demand, we purchased a larger roaster this April. It has been so much fun learning about the world of the coffee bean. We are an environmentally conscience business, using green plastic ware and recycling what we can by driving to the Coeur d Alene or Spokane Recycle Center. We are happy to provide our coffee on Six Rivers Market. The good thing about only being able to roast six pounds at a time is it is guaranteed fresh! Vern's great-grandpa Peter Skow moved to Northern Idaho in 1910, the year much of north Idaho's forests burned in a 3,000,000 acre fire complex. (Yes, that was "million.") He and his family homesteaded in (now)beautiful Cocolalla (12 miles south of Sandpoint--about 30 miles north of Coeur d' Alene) in 1911. His grandma Alice was born there in 1920.

She and Vern's grandpa Forest Spencer bought the land we farm in Cocolalla in 1961 and lived out their lives here with their family. Forest built a greenhouse on the side of the house, and Alice raised bulbs and vegetable starts to sell at the Co-op farm store when it was downtown Sandpoint at Church and 5th. She also had u-pick raspberries and strawberries. (We don't do that now.)

Vern's parents (Ray and Joan) own the place now, and continue raising (with Vern and Amy) the herd of cattle Forest started here in the 60's.

We grow and sell our naturally-grown vegetables to Winter Ridge Natural Foods Market, Ivano's Ristorante, and Spuds Rotisserie and Grill in Sandpoint and Pilgrims Market and Angelo's Ristorante in Coeur d' Alene. We also sell vegetables, homemade bread, and vegetable plants at the Sandpoint Farmer's Market. We also sell grass-fed beef and eggs from uncaged chickens from the farm--please call or email us to arrange pickup.

Last year Dad (Ray) dug the old horse-drawn potato digger out of the weeds and got the stuck wheels and gears moving again so we could use it. It sure beats digging them all by hand! This spring Ray fixed up the horse-drawn potato planter, which made planting a lot easier, too. Dad did better keeping up with the speed of operating the planter, so we let him operate the planter while Vern pulled it with the tractor. The children helped Vern plant the fingerlings by hand. We had to dig the last 200 pounds by hand, too, because the digger kept getting clogged.

We hope you enjoy our story and especially our meat and potatoes! Here is one of our favorite things:

Amy takes different colored spuds (red-, gold-, white-, and blue- fleshed potatoes) and dices them without peeling. Then she drizzles them with olive oil and tosses them with salt, pepper, freshly squeezed garlic (or garlic powder), and maybe some Italian herbs. She roasts them in a 350 degree oven, turning them occasionally until tender and lightly browned. Different fleshed potatoes also make neat mashed potatoes, potato chips, and chowder.

Though we have chosen not to join an organic program and be "organic", we raise all our vegetables to meet the same standards, minus the detailed record-keeping of daily activities. Therefore, legally we are not "organic". Though "naturally grown" does not have a legal definition, we believe this accurately labels the way we grow them.

We go out of our way to buy certified organic seed when we can find it or we save it ourselves--no GMO's. We like to focus on heirloom and open-pollinated varieties. We mix our own seed starting mix with organic materials including compost and rock powders. The garden gets rock powders, fish emulsion, manure, and compost--no chemical fertilizers, herbicides, or pesticides. We have not even used any of those that are approved by organic programs except a little insecticidal soap in the greenhouse for aphids. We use miles of drip irrigation on the garden, reducing water usage and the need for cultivation. We also use some plastic mulch to gain heat for a few crops we could not otherwise grow well and to conserve water and reduce weeds.

Our chickens get fresh greens to eat most of the time, whether they pick it themselves when we move them to a fresh plot or we bring it to them ourselves. This produces eggs with brighter yellow yolks that "stand up" on a plate, not lay flat like supermarket eggs. In the winter, the chickens get to run around happily in the greenhouse with lots of light and dry dirt to fluff in.

Our cattle herd was started by Vern's grandpa Forest in the 1960's, and has been closed for many years, limiting the introduction of diseases and pests. They eat only grass and hay (and whatever weeds are there). They get no grain or animal byproducts which helps them stay lean and healthy. Their meat doesn't have a lot of extra fat, which makes them taste better in the opinion of some, though it also makes it easier to over-cook. Fat from grain is less expensive weight in an animal, so with a lean animal you get more expensive protein for the weight you buy. We believe the balance of omega-3 and omega-6 acids in fat that is produced by grass is more healthy to consume than that produced from grain.

Heritage Farms is located in the beautiful Cocolalla Valley in the Idaho Panhandle. Our animals have a symbiotic relationship with the pastures on which they graze, each feeding the other without chemical inputs to either.

While most chickens are raised in 100% confinement, we've found that pasturing our birds adds quality while making farming more environmentally friendly. On our pastures, there's an entire ecosystem geared towards absorbing manure and eliminating pollution. The addition of fresh green plants to the chickens' diet adds quite a bit of flavor to the eggs, while the lack of crowding makes health problems uncommon. Free range eggs not only taste better and have darker yolks, but they are certainly higher in nutrients and have a superior Omega 3/Omega 6 balance to ordinary eggs.

Our Grazing Program ensures that our cattle are always grazing on lush green fresh grass, while at the same time replacing the broad spectrum nutrients they are removing. Every few days the cattle are moved to fresh pasture, and replaced by chickens, which then scatter the beef fertilizer while adding their own variety and controlling fly and bug populations. The chickens also convert the grass to luscious natural meat and eggs for your dining pleasure.

Through our Herd Share program you can receive milk from your own Dairy Cow, lovingly cared for and milked for you twice daily.

We offer Free Range Eggs and Dairy Cow Boarding year around as well as high quality Grass Finished Beef and Broiler/Fryer Chickens in season. Beef is sold by the whole, half, or quarter, or frozen by the package. Call for availability.

All-natural, no hormones, antibiotics or chemicals used in production. Organic principles applied, but not certified organic. Beef is never fed any grain, only grass-fed and grass-finished. Our beef has never been given any hormones, antibiotics or other chemical, nor have they ever been fed any grain, which could cause them to have health problems. Research shows that Grass-Finished Beef is as low fat as a skinless chicken breast, low cholesterol, and high in Omega-3 Fatty Acids. And the flavor is absolutely unbeatable!

Poultry are out on pasture when weather is appropriate, cage free at all times in large ventilated barn with fresh shredded hay for feed, excercise, and have fresh hay to eat and to use for bedding daily. The eggs they lay have dark yellow yolks which are perky in the pan, and do not spread out. Plus the flavor is absolutely WONDERFUL!

As a family, we started raising our own butcher animals because we wanted healthier, better-tasting and local meats. From a family passion to live and eat better our farm continues to evolve every day. Our pastures are registered Organic (in 2009) and all our animals live in large rotating paddocks, thriving on fresh air and wide open spaces. We custom grind our hog ration here on the farm. This hog ration is made up of LOCAL grains - primarily no-spray wheat grown locally for us here in the Kootenai Valley. We raise a variety of breeds, including some heritage breeds. We sell pork and beef by the cut, or by the mixed quarter, half or whole. We offer a variety of sausages with Organic seasonings, completely free of nitrites/nitrates/MSG, along with no wheat or fillers. We also offer cured meats (with custom hog orders) with a cure made of Organic spices and NO nitrites/nitrates/MSG.

All our beef is butchered and processed when the grass is green and growing. This is important with Grass-Fed/Grass-Finished Beef because it keeps the meat at it's tenderest and most flavorful.
